This was one of the first group hikes I went on. Park at the trailhead on the Frost Valley Road just after Winisook Lake on the hairpin turn. After walking that path for about 15 minutes, we noticed there aren’t any yellow trails marks around and that the trail looks different than what we remmembered walking. Though the yellow section is less than a mile, it’s pretty dang rocky and has several steep sections. The hike documented above is a 3.2-mile roundtrip, or 6.9 miles if you add Panther to the mix. From here you will need to hike 2 miles on the road back to the Panther Mountain parking area at the hairpin turn passed Winisook Lake. The Panther Mountain trail, also sometimes referred to as Echo Cliff, is a 0.6-mile steep hike to a set of cliffs that offer an excellent view of Piseco Lake and the surrounding landscape. A panoramic view of the central and northern Catskills opens up all along the trail that parallels the ledge. We had a great time, saw a LOT of butterflies enjoying the views and had lunch on the rocks at Panther’s summit before heading down. All in all, this hike more than deserves those 5 cameras. The most difficult part of this hike is getting to Giant Ledge (with the rocky sections you describe being the accurate part). From that rock, it’s a flat .3 miles to the summit of Panther. We’re within two points of each other, so I’m comfortable calling it a day. Or just wear whatever you have already. It’s a short hike between Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake. It can quickly be done on a simple day trip but one must always remember that the peaks in this area are remote and seldom visited so one should be well prepared for a change in weather as it can be raining here while it is sunny everywhere else in the Adirondacks. At the top of a steep section, the trail makes a sharp left, and then, right in front of you, you’ll see the trail junction with the blue-blazed Giant Ledge-Panther Mountain-Fox Hollow Trail. My phone fell out of my bag on the third ledge and managed to bounce just right and tumble over the edge. The parking lot has space for maybe 4-5 cars. It took me less than ten minutes to get here from the rock that we clambered up for our first Panther view. I can see your point about the steep, rocky sections in the beginning of the hike — but to me, doing a 3.2-mile hike with some steep sections warrants a 5/10, while tacking on an additional 3.7 miles and 1,000+ vertical feet appropriately nudges that difficulty to a 9/10. The adventure departs from the opposite side of Historic 441 from the Panther Creek picnic area (view maps and driving directions).The hike follows its namesake waterway downstream, traveling under a concrete overpass and diving into a young, mossy hardwood forest. The portion of the hike from The Giant Ledges up to Panther was definitely a tough climb and I felt like it had steeper areas than the way up to the ledges.
